Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to communicate in Auslan with a degree of fluency and spontaneity across a wide range of subjects. Communication may take place in any situation including personal, public, social, employment and educational domains.This unit aligns to an adaptation, for sign languages, of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), B2: Independent User.This is an Auslan signer who can:understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his or her field of specialisationinteract with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with proficient or native signers quite possible without strain for either partyproduce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Comprehend complex signed text on both abstract and concrete matters.
  • Extrapolate the meaning, from contextual cues, of unfamiliar signed phrases and words, and intention of the Auslan text.
  • Extract information content from recorded Auslan texts delivered in standard or local sign and identify signers’ mood and tone.
  • Comprehend signed announcements and messages on abstract and concrete topics in standard or local sign at normal speed.
  • Follow content, with some effort, of live discussion between proficient or native signers.
       
Element: Process vocabulary and grammar for signed exchanges on both abstract and concrete matters.
  • Use high accuracy, but with some gaps and circumlocution, for a broad vocabulary repertoire of signs dealing with known concrete and abstract topics.
  • Use a relatively high degree of grammatical control with only minor flaws in signed sentence structure so that meaning and questions are understood.
       
Element: Present in Auslan on abstract and concrete subjects.
  • Give clear prepared signed presentations on known concrete and abstract topics.
  • Communicate opinions, advantages and disadvantages of options.
  • Answer, in Auslan, a series of follow-up questions with a degree of fluency and spontaneity.
       
Element: Engage in spontaneous Auslan conversations on abstract and concrete subjects.
  • Initiate, maintain and close extended face-to-face conversations on both abstract and concrete topics.
  • Pronounce signs clearly and naturally with intonation.
  • Produce stretches of text with fairly even tempo and spontaneity with infrequent pauses and hesitation.
  • Follow, in detail, signing of proficient or native speakers when delivered in standard sign.
  • Ask follow-up questions to check understanding of what other signer has said and to clarify ambiguous points.

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.
